Increased Communication, Engagement, and Student Voice Through Technology

Help me give my students a camera, tripod, microphone, and lights which will be used all year in learning and communication projects of various types, for student motivation, and to create a movie theater project.

My Project

My students are always eager to express themselves but do not always have the writing skills to do it effectively and without frustration. Telling their thoughts, dreams, and opinions to a camera allows them to express themselves much more freely and creates motivation for their learning.

Recording equipment allows my students to express themselves more fully without the limitations of committing their thoughts to paper.

They record themselves explaining, brainstorming with others, discussing ideas, and telling stories. Their confidence increases as their speaking and conversational skills grow. Students also develop their listening skills as they view each others’ videos, discussing and learning from them.

Using recording equipment also creates great motivation for student learning. Last year my students were excited and worked diligently on their language skills because of the promise of writing and creating their own film in the spring. They eagerly improved not only in reading and writing techniques but also in conveying their unique “voice” in writing. They each authored a story, voted on their favorite, and cooperatively wrote a script. Then they acted in and recorded a 20-minute movie which a local theater kindly screened at a big “premiere event” for families. It was a sensational experience many will remember for a lifetime! I will definitely remember the students’ eagerness for learning and hope your support will help me minimize equipment struggles and give students an even better experience this year.
