My students come from a low-income/high-poverty area. Daily my students are faced with several challenges both inside and outside of the classroom. Our school is a safe place for them to learn and thrive. Daily I watch my students persevere despite their many life challenges. Coming to school is a safe haven for many. Our scholars have navigated the challenges of this year like rockstars! Despite all of the challenges due to COVID-19, they have worked exceptionally hard this year. Many scholars have met or exceeded grade-level goals!
We are so thrilled to be able to invite parents and community members back into our building this year to work and collaborate alongside our rockstar scholars.
For the first time since COVID, we are able to hold our Math Night in-person this year, and invite students to school in the evening to play math games with their parents. Each student will receive a baggie of dice as well as instructions for several math games that can be played at home with these dice, to practice concepts such as number fluency, addition and subtraction, comparing numbers, and more. In addition, because we are able to bring visitors back into our building this year, we are thrilled to have community members in our building on Tuesdays and Fridays to work with our scholars in small groups. These community members work with groups of 2-5 students at a time, from all grades, on academic and social skills. These dice games will also be used during these small groups as students work with cleared community members to practice academic skills, but also learn how to interact with members of their own communities: hold conversations, take turns, practice manners, show gratitude to community members, and more.
