My Project
I teach high school biology to curious and energetic students who are eager to understand the natural world around them. Many of my students come from diverse backgrounds and varying reading levels, but they all share a common fascination with life sciences. However, I've noticed that while they excel at memorizing facts and formulas, they sometimes struggle to see the bigger picture of how scientific discoveries are made and how biology connects to their daily lives.
My students would benefit tremendously from experiencing science as a narrative - understanding that behind every major biological concept lies an incredible story of human curiosity, persistence, and discovery.
I'm requesting copies of "The Story of Life: Great Discoveries in Biology" by Sean B. Carroll to transform how my students engage with biology content. This book masterfully weaves together the stories behind major biological breakthroughs, making complex scientific concepts accessible through compelling narratives.
I plan to use this book as supplementary reading material, assigning specific chapters that align with our curriculum units on genetics, evolution, cell biology, and ecology. Students will participate in literature circles, create presentations on key discoveries, and write reflective essays connecting the historical discoveries to modern biological understanding.
With these books, my students will develop both scientific literacy and reading comprehension skills simultaneously. They'll see science not as isolated facts to memorize, but as an ongoing human endeavor filled with excitement, setbacks, and breakthroughs.
Research shows that when students read about science in narrative form, they retain information better and develop stronger critical thinking skills. By bringing these stories into our classroom, I'm helping students become not just better biology students, but better readers and thinkers.
