This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Sixth grade social studies is all about geography, however there are so many books that support themes like economics, language, culture, and religion around the world. Putting books related to these topics in the hands of students expands their knowledge and helps them to practice vital literacy skills. Using the titles selected, we will utilize Accelerated Reader to take comprehension tests on information learned in each book.

The goal is for each student to select one book per month.

These selections would be in addition to what is required in their English Language Arts classes. Most of my students come from low income households. Some of their speaking and listening vocabulary doesn’t include these topics. Reading books will extend their knowledge and hopefully inspire them to learn more.

In addition to all of this, I will be doing traditional read aloud with students so that they can hear what fluent reading sounds like. Asking thought provoking questions and discussing particular topics will expand geography learning while improving literacy skills.
