Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that serves students from kindergarten to fifth grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban population in Los Angeles, California. We are part of a Spanish one-way bilingual immersion program.

We are a Title I school that serves low-income families from different cultural backgrounds and diverse needs.

As a Title I school, providing essential learning tools is vital in supporting student learning.

My Project

Reading culturally relevant literature this year has kept us engaged in our literacy and it has also supported us in building community. We've read great books that have allowed us to visualize characters who look like us and practice cultural traditions similar to ours. As I try to incorporate book titles in which my students are represented it is also important that I expose them to other cultures and races.

While reading literature with anti-racist messages and tolerance students learn compassion for others.

The two titles I am requesting depict characters that aren't of the same cultural background of most of my students but with similar life experiences. These types of reading experiences help students understand that we are much more alike than different. These types of reading experiences build tolerance and expose commonalities that we have with other cultures and races.

This year we read Inside Out and Back Again, a story about Kim. A young little girl who immigrated to the US during the Vietnam war from Vietnam. Students were able to make connections to her cultural traditions, to her learning a new language in a new country and the experience of leaving her home country in order to ensure safety.

With One Crazy Summer I want to students to experience the civil rights movement from the perspective of children. My hope is that we make connections to the current movements calling out for justice and equity. Black Lives Matter, Anti-Asian Hate and Pro Immigration themes are important for us to discuss in our daily practice because they directly affect our students. Literature can set a foundation for such important conversations, learning and action.
