Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students with autism have five or more risk factors, such as coming from low income, single-parent households, having multiple disabilities, and being minority students coming from homes where English is not the primary language. The students are enthusiastic about learning and want to learn. Sometimes they have difficulties expressing themselves or asking for help or supplies, but when they have fun activities or preferred tasks, they become engaged and express themselves to peers. The number of students has been increasing so we need a variety of activities to engage individual learners.

My Project

Our campus believes in creating a culture of inclusion and our students represent over 40 different nationalities. I would like classroom copies of the historical fiction novel, Night Dairy, set in 1947 India/ Pakistan, so my students can see the world through a different perspective but also have a shared experience with peers. The entire campus will be reading Night Diaries this summer and having discussions in the content areas about events in the novel when sudden border changes create an immediate cultural divide between Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs.

Besides the novel, I am requesting mini journals for writing, stylus pens, and books for creating positive, mindful attitudes.

Students will use mini journals to create superheroes through their writing. Using superheroes is a wonderful way of looking at equity and what powers would be useful in a fictional world. The stylus pens will tie writing with technology to also writing the old-fashioned way on paper. The other three books will be used for class activities and during social skills lessons to help students shape their own thinking in positive, mindful ways.

Students will look at themselves and the world around them with a multifaceted, multicultural perspective. There is strength in diversity. Students will understand that superpowers are not just fictional. Each of us can be superheroes if we respect diversity and focus on the positives in differences through equity and inclusion. We will use these materials throughout the year to promote inclusion, not racism.
