This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our classroom is comprised of 10 wonderful students who have various special needs. Many of the students in our classroom this year have sensory and attention needs. The students spend a large portion of their school day in a sub-separate setting in order to have their needs properly met.

As a special educator, I want to provide my students with all of the possible materials they need to have the best educational experience possible.

This transition into a new school building may be difficult for my students, and I want to ensure that I can give my students a smooth transition into our new school year. We will be moving mid-year into a renovated school building. Two school sites in one school year mean double the materials that we will need to set-up the classroom.

My Project

My students enjoy participating in imaginative play! Due to sensory needs, oftentimes during indoor recess, my students choose to stay in the classroom with me. My students are also highly motivated to work for 'choice time' in which they can engage in an educational activity for a short time upon completing their work. During this time, the students would really enjoy playing with these dolls that represent a wide variety of abilities and ethnicities. The students in my classroom have a variety of needs and unique abilities.

One student, in particular, uses a wheelchair to meet her physical needs; having dolls that also use a wheelchair and who have unique abilities will make her feel included during playtime.

Imaginative play is a great time for my students to practice their social skills, such as taking turns, making appropriate conversation, as well as reinforcing fine motor skills.
