Inclusion Is Intentionally Planning for the Success of All Students!
My students need four iPads in order to join their general education peers during mainstreaming in academic subjects to create equal access and engagement for all students.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a unique school. As a Title 1 school, our students come from a variety of different social and economic backgrounds with over 90% of our students receive free lunch. Our school is the only school in the Los Angeles School District where students are placed in the most restrictive environment on a general education elementary school site. In 2006 our school welcomed the general education students into our specialized school. Creating a dynamic school community consisting of 50% special education students and 50% general education students.
Our school community prides itself in its efforts to integrate and create an inclusive environment for all our special education and general education students.
Our special education students have a wide range of academic abilities and needs that require them to be placed in a more restrictive environment where they can receive all the support they need in one place.
My Project
Inclusion is not simply about physical proximity. It is about intentionally planning for the success of all students! I would like purchase technology devices to further support inclusion lessons. These devices will help our students communicate their choice to their peers during an activity. It will also provide our students with audio. The technology devices will also provide our student with visual images during the lesson. I will be able to download apps that will support their lesson. Our general education students can model and be recorded on how to play a game or the desired outcome of the lesson. Presenting our students with disabilities with video modeling is the latest research-based strategy that helps visual learners understand what the desired task is. In addition, I want to capture the smiles and laughs of both of student populations.
Using technology to support academic lessons content not only creates access for all students but also increases student engagement, focus and students will find gratification in learning with their special education peers.
