Including and Enabling Students With Disabilities

Help me give my students resources to affirm their identities associated with disabilities.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Fields's classroom raised $176

My Project

My students come from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities. Who they are and how they feel about their identity has a big impact on their effectiveness as a student. What do they feel they are capable of? Do they know how much I believe in them? I do my best to make them all feel included and enabled by the resources available to them in the classroom. It is important that they feel that this is their classroom and not that they are simply visiting a space for "other" students.

I want my students with disabilities to feel represented by the books and resources available to them in the classroom.

Having these things prominent in the room sends a message to them that they are wanted and that I believe in their abilities (not their disabilities).

This project provides a variety of books providing inclusiveness and identity-affirming language to support students with disabilities. Some books are general-purpose to address disability rights and inclusivity. Some books are specific to common struggles that affect students I have every year. Autism and ADHD are the most common, but I have students with physical and visual impairments too. The ear covers will help many of my students who feel overwhelmed by classroom noises and need a quiet place to feel safe.
