This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each day, I teach students who learn best in various ways. I am always working to prepare them for college and give them the skills they need for post-secondary and career success. This means different things for different students, and I am acutely aware of this when I plan my lessons.

My students live in a large, urban area and attend a 99% free or reduced lunch school.

We are a small school, which has some advantages, but it can also mean that we often lack the technology and resources that allow us to innovate and differentiate in new ways. We share computer carts, and so therefore, there is not always enough technology to go around. My students are enthusiastic and ready to learn, and my school is a great place for this.

My Project

My students with IEPs need more support that technology can often provide, such as having texts read to them or giving them a more hands-on way to learn a new concept. If I have these tablets, I can ensure that all students with IEPs in my classroom have alternate ways of learning new material and practicing what they learn. Many of my students with IEPs learn best with visuals or hands-on practice that technology can help me provide. Working hard to prepare themselves for careers, my students with IEPs are interested in technology and in how it will help them in their future both in college and beyond. For example, I have one student who loves music. I know that the 5 tablets will help me to incorporate music for him and help him to learn. He wants to read about musicians for his choice reading, and the tablets would allow me to customize reading for him and keep him engaged and growing his reading skills. I am also requesting cases to protect our tablets.

These tablets will be a game-changer for my students with IEPs.

It will help me to accommodate the curriculum. They will be much more engaged in their learning and will therefore show growth on assessments. They will be able to see and hear new concepts, using video or text read to them. They will use the tablets to get extra practice with new concepts and have some choice in what they read to engage them more in reading. This will help prepare them for post-secondary and college success.
