I teach 4th grade at a Title I school that is located in South Louisiana. My school has implemented a program called Positive Behavior Support which shifts the focus of discipline from the tradition model of punishment for negative beavior to rewarding students for good behavior. Since implementing this program, the number of office referrals have decreased significantly. Every day those students who were "caught being good" get a a slip of paper and are allowed to choose an incentive. Any time I see a child doing something kind, helping another, working hard, then I give then a Caught Being Good Slip. At the end of EACH day, the children with the slips are allowed to choose a prize. The children LOVE this!
Despite some personal hardships, the parents of my students are cooperative, supportive and desire that their children receive the best education possible. Many have basic needs, as our community was drastically impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and my school opened its arms to the students and their parents. That is why the Positive Behavior Support means so much to our students, even the gift of a pencil means the world to them.
To support this program, my class is in desperate need of motivational pencils, scented markers, erasers, practice clocks, and calculators. To the students these things are rewards but they are also items that they can use to LEARN! We use erasable boards and they love EXPO markers for them so I found some scented ones that they will really be trying hard to get! They EARN their incentive prizes. I am so proud of how far they have come and have seen such attitude changes in the children. They cherish even the smallest things they earn.
My children love school and they love learning, it makes teaching them a privilege instead of a job.
This grant would go far in helping me reward the children for their hard work and good character. I will gladly do whatever is necessary to comply with any and all terms associated with this grant and I thank you sincerely for your kind consideration of my request.
