Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year I am teaching Advanced Placement, Honors, and College Prep Biology. I am also advising the Eco Mindfulness and Garden Clubs. My students care about the environment, gardens, and campus beautification.
My students need various candies and snacks for incentives and for modeling biological concepts.
The Guess Who game and laminating sheets are for a review game that I have designed. I replace the faces with biology vocabulary terms and pictures. We need one more game because I currently have 8 games but one of my classes has more students so we need one more. The next Guess Who game laminating card I want to make is about food webs. This game helps learn vocabulary in a fun way and practice some literacy skills.
Whenever my class plays review games I like to offer an incentive of goldfish, fruit snack, starburst, or a sticker for completing the games. They get to pick their reward of choice.
The jelly beans are for an activity that students do to understand how their sense of taste works. The M&M's are for an activity where AP biology students learn how to calculate chi squared value of a pack of candies. The skittles are for a protein synthesis and mutations activity. Modeling difficult concepts with candies and food are a great way to motivate students. All students love a little snack too.
We are low on class tissues and hand sanitizer as it is a new school year. Every student needs to use tissues and sanitizer when needed to keep themselves healthy and clean as they're learning in biology class.
