Help my students liberate their minds and think of their possibilities!
Most of my ninth graders like to learn and have big dreams.
But they think they don't like to read because society has told them that reading is not for them.
But my students like a good story. They like stories of redemption, of resilience, of second chances. They like true stories of people who have faced adversity or made poor chances. They like stories that speak to them.
My Project
I'm requesting nine excellent books about young men who go to prison and what they learn there. No, these titles aren't *Malcolm X* or "Letter from a Birmingham Jail." My students will read those in due course.
Until then, these books will help my students find a path for themselves and assist them in answering why education is important.
My 16 years as a teacher tell me that young people like reading if we give them good books.
And when young people read, they become kinder and smarter -- and more gentle -- people.
