In Tune With Standards

My band students need ten metronome / tuners to have as a classroom set to teach students to become independent musicians.

I teach band and choir in grades six through twelve in a public school setting. The middle school music program has no budgeted money from the school whatsoever.

Standards. We all know that they drive our world of education. As a music teacher, I am challenged to hold my students to high standards set forth by the state and National Music Education Association. My middle school students do a very good job of playing correct notes and using correct fingerings. I must teach my students to become independent musicians that can play in tune with themselves, their sections and their full ensembles. They must also be able to develop an inner sense of tempo.

The difficult task of developing a musical ear by playing in tune will be solved as we begin using the tuners. The tuners measure to the 1/100th of a tone to show if the students are playing in or out of tune. If the student plays flat, a needle will point to the left according to how flat they are, as well as a red light will light up. The same will happen the opposite direction when they play too sharp. Once a student is playing in tune, a green light will light up, and the digital needle will read straight up and down. The visual learners in my classroom can see a digital display on the tuners. The auditory learners will use the reinforcement of the visual to support what they hear. By having a classroom set of metronome / tuners, I can encourage students to listen at a much higher level than they are used to. They will become more aware of the natural tuning process which is necessary to become a true musician. The metronome side of the tuner will flash and beep a steady tempo, encouraging the kids to create a steady pulse when playing. Students would be able to use this setting for individual feedback.
