Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of my students have yet to involve themselves into social issues outside of their homes and school. Daily, I try to talk to my students about the world and what's going on around them. Emma Golden stated that "The most violent element in society is ignorance." Awareness is monumental.
My classroom is diverse in ethnicities, religion and socio-economic statuses.
We live in the inner city, where so much is happening right outside our classroom windows. Regardless of that, my students come to school each day with open minds and hearts. They are full of joy, laughter, wonder, and curiosity. The school where I teach is a family. Each student is embraced with love, care and structure. We aim to educate each child that comes before us.
My Project
Remember when televisions were in classrooms and on occasion, the teacher would let us watch Reading Rainbow, a shuttle launch, a Presidential address or be allowed to read their newspaper when they were done?
All of those wonderful things and more are in a neat four-page magazine that comes monthly! My students can be transported each month to a new place. The Scholastic News and Science Spin is full of non-fiction texts that range from science topics, social issues, historical events and current events. It also includes a fun crossword puzzle and kid concerns.
Scholastic news has a teacher's edition that provides comprehension questions and writing prompts that accompany the main articles. There is also an interactive component online that include jeopardy games and videos that correspond with the articles. My students can partner up with other students and read the articles and have debates, or they can read independently in class or at home.
Having the Scholastic News and Science Spin will help my students become more socially and academically aware of what is going on in the world.
By reading both magazines, it can assist in improving each child's literacy skills by fostering critical thinking. It will also give my students talking points at lunch and recess. It will be the bridge to the outside world.
