This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with 4th grade students in a low-income, low-performing school in an urban metropolitan area.
The pressure to perform in core subjects places these students at a disadvantage when compared with higher performing schools. My students live in a culturally rich and diverse area with limited opportunities to learn about and experience these opportunities. Schools in neighboring communities with more funding are able to provide their students enrichment activities and classes to create well-educated students. Students in lower income and lower performing schools spend such an inordinate amount of time trying to raise test scores that students are not exposed to the many benefits of a culturally rich arts experience. My students have already been learning about the Opera from a previous proposal and are extremely excited and enjoy this time in class. In order to fully understand the richness of the Opera and other musical expressions, my students need to learn the basics about the instruments in the orchestra.
Acquiring several books with Cd's describing and explaining the roles of each instrument in the orchestra will provide a rich tapestry on which to weave other musical genres. The students will gain an appreciation for the complexity and beauty for classical music performed by the orchestra. Students will also be able to identify the sounds of each instrument and able to hear them during performances.
Your donation will ensure my students will have the knowledge and exposure to the instruments in the orchestra. This knowledge provides the students a base for which to build a lifelong appreciation for the musical arts. All students deserve the opportunity to learn and appreciate the beauty of a well-rounded education.
