My Students

I am currently a middle school English teacher. The most important thing for me as a teacher is that my students are leaving my class in June with more tools in their toolbox than when I met them in September. I want them to be ready for what lies ahead and for them to be able to meet those challenges in a more autonomous way.

It is at times challenging for my students to keep up with the advancements of today's demands because many do not have the necessary technology at home.

The majority of the students in my school are struggling financially. Often times, the students come into school without the necessary supplies. Many of our students qualify for the state's free lunch program. This never stops them from working hard every day and that is why I'd like to be able to help them print their assignments. Due to these personal hardships, technological education often falls on my shoulders within the ELA classroom.

My Project

Educators, technology experts, business leaders, and even celebrities support a new movement with a clear purpose: to teach children to read and write code. I am one of those advocates that is seeking assistance for professional development to learn how to code and turn key these vital skills to my students. “Coding is the new literacy. To thrive in tomorrow’s society, young people must learn to design, create and express themselves with digital technologies,” says Mitchel Resnick, a media arts and sciences professor at the MIT Media Lab. As stated earlier, many of my students rely on me for technology skills training but in this ever changing technology-driven era, I need to keep my knowledge up to date as well. I am requesting funding assistance to participate in a summer professional development that focuses on Exploring Computer Science with Code.

In addition to learning these vital computer skills, I will be enhancing my students' team building capabilities.

Given that most computer programs are made up of several separate smaller pieces, teamwork and collaboration have become two essential components of software development at all levels and project sizes. Students will quickly realize that teams often get software projects done much faster than individuals. Not only can groups simply write more lines of code in a given amount of time, but also different group members bring different skills to a project.

Please support my proposal to acquire admission into this professional development course. Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your consideration. Thanks for coordinating this event, CSTA.
