In the Frame: Celebrating Students Who Choose to do Better

Help me give my students appreciation for their dedication to our school's core principles (being respectful, responsible, and safe) when they are elected Student of the Month (camera), and for ongoing positive behavior support (candy).

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As part of our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) program, we recognize and reward two "Student of the Month" awards —two students who have shown leadership, growth, and commitment to making better choices. Most of our students have never received such an award, so it’s very meaningful in re-engaging in education.

Unfortunately, because we're in a juvenile detention facility, teaching staff can't bring phones inside to take amazing photos, so we must rely on an outdated school camera that requires frequent updates that we're unable to install ourselves (and doesn't take great photos).

This results in delays in printing and posting photos. Research shows that PBIS is most effective when positive behavior is reinforced quickly and consistently. This is especially important with our population, as many have experienced a lot of inconsistency. With a new self-sufficient camera that doesn't rely on outside technology or IT guys with more pressing duties to attend to to, we can celebrate moments of student success quickly, post on our PBIS boards, share during ceremonies to motivate snd boost morale among all students. I'm also including candy to reinforce ongoing positive behavior.

This project will allow us to truly focus on the positive—quite literally—by spotlighting students who are working hard to turn their lives around. These recognitions are powerful tools for encouraging continued positive behavior and showing students that their efforts are seen and valued. These photos will also go home with students, along with a certificate (they also get other incentives -- edible, school gear, etc.) as tangible reminders of their ability to succeed.

Help us highlight their stories and progress—one snapshot at a time.
