Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I have three expectations in my classroom; be respectful, be polite, and be kind. I try to create a learning environment in which students show compassion to themselves and each other. Bringing an axolotl, an endangered animal, into the classroom, will promot students to extend their respect and compassion to animals and their environment.

Over the summer, we lost our class pair of axolotls, Mango and Toothless, and we are looking forward to bringing a new axolotl into the classroom.

It is important for students to learn their connectedness to animals and their natural environments so that they can be responsible stewards of our planet.

By inviting this axolotl into the classroom, my students will work daily to care for it. We study the natural environment, research threats to axolotl populations, and brainstorm possible solutions to increase their populations. We also learn how to set up the aquarium and basic animal husbandry and care. The worm dirt, worms and salmon pellets will ensure that our axolotls will thrive in our learning environment. This axolotl will be a valued member of our classroom community and teach the students appreciation and compassion for living things.
