My Students

We are a middle school and high school that provides quality and rigorous individualized educational programs to students with significant challenges and diverse learning styles in a variety of settings that nurture independence, ensure dignity, and support integration into the community.

In our district , self-contained setting, these students require a large number of staff assistance.

This year's program, a class of six students have been learning studio photography skills.

They have limited emerging verbal skills or are non-verbal and use the assistance of communication device technology. In addition, the literacy skill level is emerging or around the grade level of pre-k yet they are in high school. There are also students who are non-readers. They are a diverse group with highly individual needs. The one thread that connects their abilities and interests is automation. They all respond very well to all types of electronic devices.

Photography levels the playing field in that it builds self-confidence and allows the kids to develop job readiness skills, express themselves in new ways and present their work to the community at large. The program is specifically designed to meet their special needs and promotes independence.

My Project

The students of the work study photography studio class would like to hang their printed photographs in the surrounding hallway outside their classroom. Since September, the students have created studio style portraits of many of the students throughout the entire school. Recently, a portrait was accepted in the 2019 New York City Department of Education Borough Arts Festival Student Visual Art Exhibition. We would like to print the photographs taken throughout the year and exhibit them in the school halls. This exhibition will be revolving so that students can update the photographs on display to showcase their development.

This project will engage the entire school.

The portraits of the student models will provide self-confidence building and pride. The photographers who created the images will have the opportunity to learn photography with a project based learning approach. This student based pedagogy offers students to acquire a deeper knowledge through active exploration of real-world challenges and problems.
