Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My Pre-K inner-city artists l love to "read" almost as much as they love to paint, glue and glitter. After art projects are finished the children pick a book from the reading center, sit on the rug and imagine stories to fit the pictures. Sometimes we illustrate our own stories.
In addition to the free time reading I start or end each lesson with a story.
Our library is read to tatters! Everyone loves "No David" (complete with finger wagging). "Mix it Up" and "Press Here" by Herve Tullet are the "magic books" that that require "Abracadabra" with the turn of every page.
We need new copies of old books and many new art books.
My Project
My Pre-K inner city artists are as enthusiastic about books as they are about paint and glitter. Most of my students do not have books at home so these books open up a new world of wonder. Often a student will excitedly show me a picture and point out that relates to the current project or art that is on the wall. They will find an animal we have drawn, talk about the different colors of fruit Cezanne has painted or find primary colors in an illustration.
I want children to read for pleasure.
It is a painless way to build vocabulary, increase understanding and expand their world. A child who reads for fun will do better in every subject in school...even those pesky word problems in math.
