it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are dynamic people who have individual needs and rich lives. These lives sometimes lead students to miss a class period- maybe they're in the nurse's office with an asthma attack, maybe they're taking a Mock AP test, maybe they're working with the Leadership to host guests on campus.
With nearly 200 students, it's almost impossible to track who is here and who isn't on a class-to-class basis.
What makes that harder? The fact that every period I teach a different course, which means five different sets of assignments and hand-outs each day. How do I ensure that all students get what they miss when they're absent?
My Project
With so many students and so many reasons that kids get pulled out of the classroom, it is a managerial nightmare to try to get every kid every paper/assignment they missed in their absence. Having a set of communication centers would help alleviate this problem. Students would be able to check the right slot for the right day of the week to pick up what they need, without pulling me away from supporting student need for the current day's lesson.
It's true this organizational system works to take a load off of my own shoulders.
But you know what's even better? It helps students develop their own self-sufficiency. "You weren't here yesterday? You know what to do!" With the opportunity to be self-directed, students become less dependent on the teacher and more self-reliant; this system is an opportunity to empower students to manage their own organizational skills and work habits.
