This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever sat down on a dirty, old rug? That's what my students have to do every day.
I teach a wonderful group of 24 second graders.
Over half of them are English language learners with very limited vocabulary. They come from low economic backgrounds and most of them receive free or reduced meals at school. My students are very eager to learn and work extremely hard.
My Project
I am asking for a new rug for my classroom. We currently have an old and stained rug where I have my students sit for all kinds of activities. Rug time is when I have their complete attention and I can see their inquisitive eyes looking at me.
When I lift a corner of the rug, I can see that it's definitely falling apart from the bottom. It leaves lots of residue on the bottom.
I feel extremely bad that my students have to sit on such a dirty rug. It gets vacuumed once a week and washed once a year. But I think this is the end of the road for this rug. A new rug is just impossible for the school to purchase at this time due to the budget cuts.
It would make a world of difference to have a new rug in my classroom since I use it so much.
My students sit on it for read-aloud, for pair-share activities, for introducing a new concept, for solving puzzles on a rainy day, for math games, and for many more activities. Please help my students have a clean and decent place to sit when they have to go on the rug.
