I teach third grade in an elementary school in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Our school is a title one school, where all of our children get free lunch and come from low income families.
The children in our school are wonderful. Despite their home life, they come in everyday with a big smile on their face. This year the third grade is working extra hard because they will not only be taking the city wides tests, but the state exams as well. They work very hard on their reading strategies during their Independent Reading time. What we are missing to help our children is a listening center. The Listening Center will help all the children with their reading fluency, their pacing, and most of all their reading comprehension. The listening center is especially important to the children who don't speak English at home. We have many read alouds with tapes and CD's, we just don't have a center that works, and we don't have enough money in our budget for a new one. Please help us listen to a story!
