This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My first graders attend a great school in Northern California. The school that I work for is in a high-poverty area. Some of my students face the normal things that are often associated with poverty. These obstacles do not impact their love for school. My students love to learn new things and are very excited about learning how to read.
I am very happy that I work at a school where the staff really believes that all students can achieve academic success with the right support and mindset.
My Project
Do you know how special field trips are for young students? It is something that many students experience multiple times every school year. Field trips should not just be a luxury for the children of the wealthy. Many districts budget enough for one field trip for school year. Parents, PTA, and fundraisers usually fund any additional trips. My school does not have a PTA, and I cannot expect my students' families to fund extra trips, when many of them are working hard to make ends meet.
My school receives 100% free lunch.
My students deserve to have the same school experiences as other students who live in wealthier areas. Visiting the Academy of Sciences would teach them about the natural environment of California, and give them a hands-on learning experience that can't be achieved with a textbook.
