Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have sixty of the most interesting fifth graders you will ever meet. They are funny, smart, caring, and sadly, struggling. Their lives are rough. Even so, they never give up and they keep trying. One group is an ICT classroom with many different learning disabilities and the other is a mixture of gen ed and ELLs.

Most students come to my class 2-3 grade levels behind in reading.

My job is to close this gap in their education before they go to middle school. One thing that makes our school unique is that we are a universal poverty school, so all students are entitled to free meals. We have breakfast in the class, lunch, and many students stay for after school so they can have dinner as well. It is a rough neighborhood but the kids are not jaded. They are lovable and very worth the hard work and effort that goes into teaching at this type of school.

My Project

The whiteboard easel that the school gave me is literally FIRST GENERATION. It takes up 1/4 of my room (it's big) and the middle piece that holds the two sides together falls out and the easel has almost hit students twice this year. The side that you would post a paper on has two screw knobs that take like 15 minutes to get right because you have to balance the papers, screw, and hope it all works without falling.

My students are ELL and Special Education learners, and to have such a hard time getting the presentation easel to work isn't good for kids who are easily distracted.

I need an option that will make presenting easy, meaningful, and SAFE! This has a whiteboard surface for writing and a clip at the top for hanging papers. Also, it is much smaller and on wheels so I can move it to any group that needs more attention or help.

This presentation easel is EXACTLY what my special education and ELL students need to help them continue to grow as students.
