In Love With Literacy

My Project

My students never cease to amaze me. From the first day they enter my room to the very last day of school, they continue to grow and expand their knowledge with enthusiasm and curiosity.

The greatest reward I get is watching my students light up with pride as they learn how to expand and display their thinking in a balanced literacy environment.

Expectations are set high, and students work to be the best version of themselves. Their energy and dedication to their academic growth has always been, and will always remain, admirable and encouraging.

My students come from very low socioeconomic backgrounds, making it very difficult for them and their families to afford appropriate school supplies. When this project is funded, the students will have the learning materials they will need to be successful with our literacy units and the financial pressure will be lifted from their families. Students will then be able to focus more on learning rather than whether or not they can afford what they need. Students will be using one composition notebook to display their thinking about the books they read throughout the year…this will be their Reader’s Notebook. Another notebook will be transformed into their Writer’s Notebook. Students will use this composition notebook for strengthening their writing skills. The final notebook will be used by students to develop their organized note-taking skills by way of Cornell Note-Taking; an excellent organizational, writing and study skill that will continue to be developed as they prepare for middle school and high school. Lastly, students will use each folder as a means of organizing their work and notebooks; blue for reading, yellow for writing, and orange for Social Studies.
