In Living Color!

My students need a color printer so they can enjoy lasting colored images of geologic phenomenon, aurora, the vibrancy of underwater life, and other natural phenomena that doesn't translate to black and white copies.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a lively and curious group! They love hands-on experiences, and appreciate Science class for having the opportunity to work in groups with tangible items. My students are about 30% non-proficient English Learners, and I have the privilege of also teaching an English Language Development Science Class for those who are newcomers to the US! To meet student language needs at every level, I rely on highly engaging lessons that help students build their language and communication, while still holding student attention.

The best part of my day is seeing my students ask questions based off observations they make.

This happens most when students are given engaging materials, like models or engineering challenges. When my students engage in an NGSS lesson, they are learning not only about scientific concepts but are building skills that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. I can't wait to see how our future generation of leaders solves problems to make our world a better place.

My Project

The resource I chose for this project is a colored printer. Students are tactile learners, and with laminated, colored images of natural phenomena, students are able to make a more emotional connection to difficult science content. With this printer, I plan on printing (and laminating, for a lasting effect) images of the grand canyon, aurora borealis, the tropical reefs, and global maps of native skin color to understand diversity and natural selection.

NGSS standards utilize Crosscutting Concepts (CCC)'s as part of their curriculum.

The CCC's include identifying and explaining Patterns, Cause and Effect, and Structure and Function. Seeing images close-up, in color will help students connect to these CCC's to an even greater extent.
