In Algebra Class We've Got Problems!

My students need these cards, books and games to return to a fun and hands on learning environment after the devastating tornado.

My Students

“I never teach my pupils; I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.” ~ Albert Einstein. After the devastating tornado, my students need to return to an environment where I can provide the conditions in which they can learn.

My students are 8th graders in southwest MO.

They are at the age when they have a perfect sense of humor and aren't afraid to challenge themselves or their teachers! Although I've just received a new group of students, I have already been very impressed with their attitudes and desires to learn. Due to the tornado this will be a very different year for teachers and students alike. By providing hands on activities, discovery learning, and games I hope that I can help to alleviate some of the stress and return the students to a level of normalcy.

My Project

These resources will be used for both general 8th grade students as well as with advanced students taking high school level algebra. By providing a donation students will have access to math games such as Algebra Bingo, two graphing card games, the “Integers in Action Lab”, and “The Great Race Across China” solving equation game. Through teacher resource materials, students will be provided with real-world links to algebra through fantasy baseball, football, and basketball activities. Team work will be one of the focuses when activities from “61 Cooperative Learning Activities in Algebra 1” is used. The resources I've requested will help to take algebra off the page and bring it to life.

It is estimated that 1 in 3 of my students in my classroom this year were displaced by the tornado.

The learning, normalcy, and fun provided by school are more necessary this year than ever before. It is vital that we are able to answer the question "When are we going to use this?" while still allowing the students to play and be children. I thank you in advance for thinking of my students!
