My students need various learning materials, art supplies, books, and instruments to learn and appreciate people with differing abilities and cultures.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with 18 wonderful and inquisitive Pre-Kindergarten students in a very diverse school in Brooklyn, New York. We have children from many different cultures in our class and children with many special abilities. The children love to learn new things every day and socialize with eachother through play.
In a time of exclusion, it is time to teach our children about inclusion!
Many children have been exposed to the current news and the controversies surrounding people with different needs, women's rights, racism, and illegal immigration. Although our students are too young to understand the depth of this, the tension and constant talk of exclusion enters their psyches and affects them deeply.
My Project
In our country, we are now in a time of exclusion. There have been many incidents when people have made fun of others for their varying abilities, have put down others based on their gender, and have excluded others based on their nationality. Although we try so hard to shelter our young children from this, it is inevitable that they will hear or see it at some point.
We should never normalize exclusion.
It is my hope that by exposing children to the wonderful achievements of people of all facets and engaging them in multicultural activities, that the children will not only learn to accept others, but greatly appreciate others as well as themselves. I am asking for various art materials to create multicultural art. I am asking for multicultural instruments and music to enjoy the music and dance traditions of others. I am asking for multicultural and multi-ability books, puzzles, dolls, and a dollhouse to bring inclusion into their learning and imaginative play. We would also like a globe so we can see where we live on Earth and others live. As we learn to appreciate others, we will also learn and appreciate how unique and special we are!
We would greatly appreciate if you would donate to this project of inclusion. This project is essential to the learning of social skills and social studies. Thank you!
