Help me give my students a comfy floor seat and liquid sensory viewers for when they need time to themselves in the class Calm Down Corner.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Barley's classroom raised $206

My Students
My first graders love to learn. They are curious about every corner of the world around them. They are wonderfully compassionate and creative. Their imaginations are as endless as the sky above us. Despite all the wonder and zealousness they have, there is also stress, fear, and grief. The world outside of the classroom--the world just around the corner--can be harsh and scary. Unfortunately, some of that makes its way into our halls.
My students are bright, inquisitive, and enthusiastic learners.
Unfortunately, many of them do not get much sleep at home. A number of their households are unsafe in one way or another. When they come to school, they need to feel safe and seen.
My Project
Every day in the classroom, my first graders and I talk about our feelings. If there's ever a major conflict or tension in the classroom, we talk about it. Then, we reset with a dance video or book read aloud. Sometimes, a student needs a little time alone. The classroom may get too loud. They may feel frustrated after an assignment or unkind word said by a peer.
My students have learned that all they have to do is ask and they can have some time to themselves.
In a little corner of the classroom, there is a rug and a plushie. There, a child can sit or lie down for a moment to rest and reset. The floor seat, sensory tubes, and breathing board will aid students in their understanding of their own feelings and help them relax enough to continue learning. The timer will serve as a visual to alert the student to when they will return to the group. The magnetic name plates will help me and my students keep track of who needs to use the Calm Down Corner next.
