This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students attend a small, autonomous, public, Title 1 high school where the student population is 93% youth of color and 75% of the students qualify for the free lunch program. Many of them experience living in health and wellness deserts and since COVID, the well-being of some of my students has declined. Even though a majority of the students come from adverse backgrounds, they are bright and enthusiastic learners who are eager to learn how social gardening and social gastronomy can improve mood and well-being.

I'm offering my students a way to cope as well as a learn about food pathways by spending more time outside in nature maintaining the school garden and cooking meals in the outdoor classroom/kitchen.

The coco coir will be used to amend the natural clay soil in the school garden as well as used as a planting medium for our container garden. The goal is to maintain a beautiful school garden that the entire school community can enjoy. The blender and hand mixer will be used to make fruit smoothies, sauces and baked goods when we cook. Further, the students will use the various pantry items to cook with on camp stoves and camp oven we already have.

The social gardening and social gastronomy activities will create opportunities for students to establish/maintain strong school community ties and help with social connections. These activties will also provide a sense of personal accomplishments for my students as well as a sense of contributing to their school community. At the end of the day, it is our connections to each other and to nature that helps maintain good health and well-being. Thank you for considering giving to this important project!
