I need to strengthen my understanding of how to teach phonemic awareness, or the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in words, to more effectively help struggling readers reach their goals.

My Students
I love teaching! I teach at a Title I-funded, public school in Georgia. The student population I serve is 98% African-American and 2% Hispanic. A full 100% of my classes fall under the category of receiving free or reduced price lunch. Despite their many economic challenges, when they walk into my classroom, they are taught to reach beyond the stars.
My students love learning through interactions with a variety of hands-on materials.
I am truly happy and fortunate to work with this unique and diverse group of students. The achievements of my students inspire me and I am happy to continue to improve myself as a teacher for them.
My Project
The Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum is world-renowned for helping students develop the foundational skills needed for successful reading through the use of a multi-sensory approach and whole-body activities. These materials will not only strengthen my understanding of the developmentally appropriate sequence for learning phonemic awareness skills but also will provide me with the resources necessary to teach these skills to a wide range of students.
Along with teacher professional development, Heggerty provides the skill-building resources needed to transition struggling readers into confident readers.
This reusable resource has the potential to impact the lives of countless students and teachers.
