Improving Our Reading Skills With the New York Times!

My students need classroom subscriptions of The New York Times Upfront in order to improve their ability to read and analyze nonfiction texts.

My Students

My students are a large group of curious readers from Brooklyn, NY. These 8th-grade students love to debate and make connections between what they read and what they learn in other subjects. In addition, they are also always making connections to the real world. Many of my students do not have the resources or the support at home to purchase their own copies of books, so I am constantly searching for ways to put books in their hands -- even if it means buying them the books myself.

My Project

Bringing 15 subscriptions of the New York Times Upfront into my classroom will give my students the opportunity to strengthen their reading skills while learning about what is going on in the world around them. These magazines will expose these students to well-written nonfiction pieces and challenging vocabulary.

It is my belief that reading current news and editorial articles will not only strengthen their skills, but will allow them to be better informed about the world in which they live.

High school is right around the corner for these young adults, so it is time to encourage daily reading and an increased understanding of current events.
