Improving Motor Skills with Functional Skills

Help me give my students materials for sensory regulation with the spin chair and materials to produce items with their hands.

My Project

The craft materials requested such as the clear plastic sheets, cutting blades for a Cricut, and sticker paper will help my students in two ways. It provides them with the media to make something creative which they can share with others, and I can use these items to make learning materials for handwriting and visual tracking.

Many of the other craft items are Valentine’s Day-based.

This will provide me with enough time to figure out adaptations on how to teach them the different motor skills to blow up the balloons and package the items they create with the plastic sheets and sticker paper so my students of all abilities can participate with the least amount of physical adult assistance as possible. We plan on creating goodie bags to share with others. Many skills that are required to assemble these packages are frequently taken for granted. The students need to be able to count with one-to-one correspondence and have the fine motor skills to grasp, place, and manipulate the individual items, plastic package, and the sealing fastener. They need to follow multiple step directions, be able to request materials, and label and share with others.

This is a more engaging way of learning different concepts and skills than rote learning. The sensory twirling chairs are an important component to utilize with the craft activities. Many of our students need sensory input to help regulate themselves. Our school does not have a sensory room or a way for the students to receive vestibular input. The twirling chairs will be used as a proactive sensory tool to help get the students regulated and organized in order to be able to sustain focus for longer periods of time in order to complete their tasks.
