This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This September I will be starting my 13th year of teaching in the School District of Philadelphia. I am the Middle School English as a Second Language teacher at my school and I teach approximately 50 students with various levels of English proficiency. Our school has students from over 20 different countries from around the globe!
Although it is a challenge to start middle school in a new environment with little to no English, my students embrace it!
They are eager to learn and tackle any task given to them with joy.
My Project
The challenge my middle school ESL students face is that their English proficiency level sometimes does not match their grade level. Often the expected reading is far more difficult and frustrating; even for the most hardworking students. Graphic novels offer a great compromise. Graphic novels are a low risk, high reward type of reading. The topics are relevant and age appropriate for my students but contain many helpful cues. If there is an unknown vocabulary word or plot twist, pictures can offer context clues to determine meaning. This is a crucial skill for ESL students to have. I plan to allow my students to use the books during independent reading time and for homework.
