Improving Classroom Air Quality for Students With Autism

Help me give my students Give the gift of clean air to my students with autism!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Wade's classroom raised $275

This project is fully funded

My Project

We are seeking funding to provide a high-quality air purifier for a specialized classroom for students with autism. The air purifier will not only improve the physical environment by ensuring cleaner, healthier air but also promote the overall well-being of the students.

Rationale and Need: Children with autism face unique challenges that extend beyond academics.

One of the lesser-discussed aspects of autism is the difficulty many students face with personal hygiene and cleanliness. Due to sensory sensitivities, a range of tasks - including maintaining personal hygiene, can feel overwhelming or uncomfortable. As a result, some students may not consistently engage in behaviors such as regular handwashing, changing clothes, or keeping their immediate environment clean. This can lead to issues such as a higher likelihood of spreading allergens, germs, and airborne irritants within the classroom.

Additionally, many students with autism are more susceptible to environmental factors such as poor air quality. Dust, mold, and airborne pollutants can exacerbate sensitivities, leading to discomfort, difficulty concentrating, and even negative health effects. By providing an air purifier, we can reduce the presence of harmful particles in the air, supporting better overall health, reduced absenteeism, and a more conducive learning environment.

Many children with autism experience heightened sensitivities to sensory input. The air purifier will help mitigate unpleasant odors, dust, and environmental triggers that may be distracting or distressing. A cleaner classroom can reduce the spread of germs and allergens, promoting better overall health and reducing the likelihood of illness-related absences. And finally, a more comfortable and cleaner environment allows students to focus better on their learning without being distracted by environmental irritants. This leads to improved academic performance and overall engagement.
