Implementing Technology Across the Grades

My students need 5 iPad mini 2s with Wi-Fi- 16GB and 6 iPad Airs with Wi-Fi - 16GB in order to use the numerous on-line resources to enhance their learning.

My Students

My students are eager to learn and they won't let anything stop them from learning. Some of my students are learning English as a second language or they come to school hungry. All of them have made great progress this year. That said, my classes are in significant need of supplemental technology.

I teach several grades; I teach kindergarten in the morning and then I teach technology to fourth, fifth, and sixth graders in the afternoon.

We are a small community public elementary school in the San Francisco Bay Area. The student population is very diverse. 78% of the students are minorities, 55% are socioeconomically disadvantaged, 21.7% are English Learners, and 13.7% are students with disabilities. Our students, while they are frequent users of mobile technology, are in dire need of additional technology resources. They need supports that will allow teachers to increase student buy in and engagement.

My Project

I have requested iPad mini 2's and iPad Airs that will be used to supplement the aging computer lab that is at our school by allowing students to access curriculum material and assessments. The computer lab is adequate for learning to type or for looking up information, but computer time is shared between 14 teachers, each of which are limited to 50 minutes a week. This is a huge disservice to the children, as they need increased exposure to technology. I would like to be able to use the iPads in the classroom to allow the students access to technology all day long and participate in enrichment and remediation activities. There are many on-line programs that I have implemented across the grades, such as Khan Academy and IXL, that would allow the students extra time to practice their math skills. The students would use Google Classroom to collaborate on class projects, while others will use Edmodo. The students would also use the cameras on the iPads to make multimedia presentations.

Using iPads in the classroom will engage my students in school work.

They will have further access to a critical technology which will help them complete class assignments with other students. They will have the opportunity to use current technology to prepare themselves for the contemporary educational experience; they need additional technological support to prepare them for middle school, high school, college and, most importantly, future careers.
