This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
COVID-19 has greatly impacted the one thing our school is known for; our performing arts, which help to support our math and reading curriculum in unexpected ways. Our shows were cancelled, students couldn't learn new instruments and music wasn't the same. This isn't limited to our general education students, our students who have special needs were affected even more because they needed visual and hands-on opportunities to learn in music. Going virtual has allowed us to learn more theory, but for these students, theory is difficult to practice without being in person.
I may be biased but I think I am the luckiest teacher because I have the honor of using music class to help support and reinforce the math and reading concepts our students need.
Music helps to reinforce math concepts through the use of fractions, addition, subtraction, and so much more than expected through learning to read music and playing new rhythms. Learning music vocabulary, history, and more help to reinforce the students in reading and comprehension. The best part is we get to learn a new musical skill while doing it. Having these boomwhackers will help the little ones begin to understand rhythm which requires the addition skills they are learning in kindergarten and 1st grade. The saxophones will help our students use another instrument to learn how to read and play music. Playing an instrument has great potential to help students who seek to pursue a career in the musical arts as well as those who will use their knowledge to gain scholarships to colleges and universities.
I look forward to watching our students learn and grow with these additions to our music class!
