Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach an enthusiastic group of third through fifth graders who are each as unique as they are lovable. My students are eager to learn and grow. Their passion for learning comes out in so many ways, from sharing their opinions on our class read aloud to expressing their thoughts and feelings in their reflection journals. Although all my students have their own strengths and growth areas, we all particularly love our daily independent reading time where we turn on our twinkle lights, get cozy, and curl up with a good book.
My students thrive in environments where they feel known, loved, and valued.
As a class, we are striving to build that space for each other. My students come from many different backgrounds and have many different needs, but each day we are committed to coming together and supporting one another in our learning journey.
My Project
This year my students are taking a deep dive into a number of pressing, relevant issues our nation is currently facing. We are opening the year by studying the U.S. Government and the Election Process. However, the election is just the tip of the iceberg for our learning this year. A topic that students constantly hear about in the news (and that affects many of them personally) is immigration. Over the course of the school year, we will learn about the history of immigration in our country to help us gain a deeper understanding about the present state of immigration policy.
These books celebrating the diverse experiences and accomplishments of immigrants in the United States will give my students a fuller picture of immigration and it's relevance to current events.
With these resources, students will have access to a multi-faceted set of stories that show the similarities and differences across different immigrant groups and different time periods in our history. It is now more important than ever for students to be equipped with the knowledge they need to become empathetic global citizens. With this knowledge, students will be equipped to build on the work (and correct the mistakes) of those that came before them.
