Immersed in the Civil Rights Movement

My students need tickets to the APEX African-American History Museum so that they can learn to deeply appreciate the rich history of Civil Rights that resides in Atlanta.

My Students

When it comes to the study of the Civil Rights Movement, there is no better city to live in than Atlanta. Our students need to know about the rich history that they are surrounded by and a trip to the APEX Museum in the heart of the Sweet Auburn District would be a great way to ignite their passion!

We have the most amazing field lesson program at our school and all you have to do is ask our students about it to hear about it's full awesome-ness.

They will tell you about the places we go and how fun they are, and they'll happily tell you about some really cool things they learned while on one of the trips. But in the same breath, they will also tell you about what it took to earn going on the trips, how hard it was to keep their paycheck average high enough. They might even confess that they haven't been on all the trips because they hit a rough patch once that dragged their average down. And these paychecks are what it's all about to us. They are our way of holding students accountable for their behavior and they are a great way to make scholars realize that their actions have real and direct consequences. What better life lesson is there?

My Project

The APEX Museum sits in the heart of the Sweet Auburn District in downtown Atlanta, and this historic area will serve as the backdrop for an amazing field lesson for our scholars. We will celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. by touring this historic area, as we seek to immerse ourselves in the accomplishments and promise that our city symbolizes. By helping us with the price of these tickets, it provides our trip with the kind of context-providing education that we seek for our field lessons as our students will be guided through 150 years of African-American history in Atlanta.

This project is important on so many levels to our students who work so hard to climb the mountain to college.

First, these trips in general provide them with a powerful incentive to develop the habits that a successful scholar must have if they are to fulfill their potential. Secondly, this trip will really speak to the heritage of our students and provide them with a deep knowledge of a proud history. And hopefully, it will inspire our student to become the next great generation of leaders.
