Imagine.... YOU are a scientist! YOU, a 9 year old boy in third grade! YOU, a brilliant, genius that has solved world hunger, discovered a new element, and has invented one the most useful machines known to man! YOU... are a scientist!
This is the feeling that I want my third graders to have. I would like for them to experience, first hand, the ability to build, invent and discover something new and illuminating. Many of our children are poverty stricken and would not be given the opportunity to discover science in this manner, otherwise.
I teach all subjects and the materials that I am asking for would provide my students with an opportunity to engage in scientific thinking during reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, and most importantly science.
The proposal that I would like for my classroom would allow children to experience each of our Science Units through hands-on experiences. The activities that I would like to provide would include building simple circuits from mini-kits for building a radio, a small engine, a music box, a motion detector, and a FM radio in our inventions and machines unit.
I would also like to provide my students with the personal knowledge and the 'being there' experience during our unit on rocks, by giving them rocks to feel, examine and observe.
During our unit on the weather, I would love for the children to have a weather station at our school. The children could observe, document, and discover the effects of wind, temperature, and precipitation on our community. Each of these experiences would enhance and go hand-in-hand with our state standards.
Just imagine...YOU a scientist! A REAL scientist, whose discovered, invented, and experienced things that you will NEVER forget! Just think what you could do when you grow up...and all because you could do this!
