Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The Gifted Learning Center, located at Sahuaro School, includes students Kindergarten through 6th grade. We have 65 students and 4 teachers in the Center. Students attend the Center from all over the Phoenix Metropolitan area. Our students are highly gifted and are able to progress in all academics at an appropriate pace and rigor.

Our students are extremely creative and they love to solve problems.

Most of the day in the center is spent with multi-aged peers, reading, writing, and doing math and science. Students are in charge of their learning and are also given many chances to make their own educational decisions.

My Project

Technology is here and now for our students. The students in the Gifted Learning Center are in the middle of an innovation project. The innovation project is to find a problem that students may have, a problem that may be exclusive to our community or a problem that the world might need to have solved. Students will use the engineering process of ask, imagine, plan, create, improve. Part of this project is to create prototypes for their innovations.

Once students have imagined their innovations, the 3D printer and filament will be used for students to be able to print and build their prototypes.

Students are willing to persevere through learning new material and solving real problems when they have technology as a motivator. Students will work collaboratively and cooperatively with a focal point that allows for open-ended innovation and creativity.

Students will have to imagine their invention first in a 2D state and then the challenge of realizing their ideas in a 3D space. It will increase their understanding in many different concepts in mathematics. Having a 3D printer will make their learning much more meaningful and tangible.
