My students need bell mallets, drum sticks, drum mutes, practice pads, cleaning swabs, mouthpiece patches and instrument cleaning brushes as we prepare for concert season
Frenetic energy fills the air as my students make their way down the dreary, long and empty basement hallway. At the far end of the hall lies a small band room, a place where exuberance is embraced and learning and laughter is the norm. Our classroom is full of life, energy and passion!
My students attend a large middle school in a diverse, urban setting.
In our school a multitude of languages are spoken and the students respect the amazing diversity of our community. In the band room, students from a wide range of cultures, economic backgrounds and academic tracks work together. There are over 200 students in the band program. The vast majority of them have never touched a band instrument prior to the seventh grade, yet they achieve amazing things. They participate in state adjudication, community ensembles, the All County Band and Jazz Ensemble as well as regional honor band festivals. My students are extremely giving of their time and talents. They voluntarily accompany the elementary school chorus and perform at a local nursing home. My eighth graders help teach the new beginners within the program. They are passionate about our music program care deeply about the future of our band.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will primarily be used to clean and maintain the instruments. The swabs will be used to clean out the woodwinds after every rehearsal and the brass saver brushes will be used when I flush out all of the brass instruments. The mouthpiece patches will help the woodwind players to stabilize their embouchure when they play. The bell mallets, drum sticks, drum mutes and practice pads will help my percussionists perform at a higher level. As we prepare for another concert/festival season, these important supplies will help my students a great deal.
These donations will help my students immensely.
Due to insufficient funds, I do much of the repair work on the instruments myself. These supplies will help to keep the instruments in better condition, as many are shared among multiple students. Our band program has become an role model for many other schools throughout the region. It was built entirely with funding from grants, contests and donations.
