My Students
Imagine if you will: Two elementary schools servicing nearly 2100 students and counting. Imagine all the paper it takes to provide those students with a quality art experience. Resources as basic as paper can really take a hefty bite out of our yearly art supply budgets.
Our students are pretty privileged to be part of a school district that values the fine arts.
Our students are creative and curious. Our students explore, experiment and examine. Our students are guided and challenged to become life long learners so that they may succeed in life. That being said, a quality art experience comes with a price tag.
Teaching art between 2 elementary schools can get hectic. Utilizing artist tools like sketchbooks and portfolios offer much needed organization and continuity. My second school is a Title 1 school, so extra tools like sketchbooks offer students another opportunity for rigor in our curriculum. It offers an opportunity to reinforce reading, writing, experimentation, and it engages the learner.
My Project
Imagine the possibilities. Materials as basic and as necessary as paper offer endless possibilities. At the beginning of the school year, our art students construct sketchbooks and portfolios. Students are introduced to the elements and principles of art. We discuss realistic and abstract art forms. Students then plan out a design for their sketchbooks and portfolios armed with their new art vocabulary. Their sketchbooks are used throughout the year for notes on artists, art history, art styles, media, techniques, and for making practice drawings for their final art projects.
Our students will end up with a personal sketchbook and portfolio at the end of the school.
They will use both throughout the year. I hope you get to see their smiles and feel the sense of pride they exude as they leave with both at the end of the year. I think you might be able to imagine.
