My students need 10 copies of "The Lightning Thief" by Rick Riordan and 10 disks to sit on to help them concentrate on the reading.

I teach what is considered to be the most high-risk population at a public urban middle school - a 7th grade special day class serving students with learning disabilities and emotional disturbances.
Imagine never having been exposed to Greek mythology. Think about all the references to Greek mythology that you take for granted. This lack of exposure is the reality for many of my students. The majority of my students come from the most poverty stricken neighborhoods in the city. Students who are living in poverty often miss opportunities to broaden their knowledge base. Compound that lack of access with a learning disability or an emotional disturbance and you get a pretty solid barrier to learning. Most of my students have ADHD, and sitting still long enough to take in information is a challenge in and of itself.
I want to read The Lighting Thief, by Rick Riordan, with my class with the incentive of going to see the movie when it comes out in 2010. While reading the book we will study Greek mythology to further deepen our knowledge base. The disks will be used for students to sit on. These have been shown to enhance concentration, particularly helpful for students with ADHD. After we watch the movie, we can practice writing skills by composing comparative essays.
Your can provide books for the most high-students at my middle school, engaging books that will motivate students to read, promoting a love of reading. The disks will not only help with this, but we will be able to use them throughout the school day in all academic areas.
