This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
At our school we are incredibly lucky to have a community of a rich melting pot of cultures. We celebrate differences, while maintaining the unified goal of setting our students up to be as successful in the real world as we possibly can. In our classroom, we build upon connections made across these differences and similarities from our cultures in hands on, project based learning.
3rd Grade math is all about exploration.
My focus as a teacher has become making math as relatable to the real world as possible. My students become excited when math is tangible, visual, different than the run of the mill. With this generation, technology only adds to the excitement.
With a high percentage of our population having English as their second language, I find a certain level of comfort in math class, because numbers are a universal language. Math is a place for my students to build confidence, to make mistakes and then learn from them, to practice logic, to face challenges with rigor and most importantly to make connections and feel successful.
My Project
The world would be a pretty boring place if we all learned in the same way. But the amazing differences in our students can sometimes pose a challenge in the classroom for teachers. Moving into the next school year, my biggest focus is creating a learning environment that is stimulating, productive, challenging, rigorous but most importantly built for the success of ALL of my students.
Our school is an incredible school with a variety of cultures, ethnicities, backgrounds and needs.
Because of this, my students would thrive in a classroom filled with visual, hands on, movement based learning.
Hot Dots are an interactive hands on experience that is perfect for English Language Learners or friends that simply learn better visually. I plan to use these daily as a center. A lot of teaching math is intentional repetition to encourage memorization. 3rd grade math is really building the foundation of fact fluency, so that students are able to move on to high rigor word problems without facing the challenge of not knowing how to do the actual operations.
I teach departmentalized math, which means that I see three classes of about 23 students every single day. The biggest challenge I have faced is meeting the needs of nearly 70 students at once. I believe that using fidget tools and other physical space tools would enhance my classroom greatly. I really want my classroom to become a place my students WANT to be, where they feel comfortable to explore, make mistakes, but most of all learn.
