Imaginative Play for High Risk Students

Help me give my students some good old-fashioned play toys and are different from the technology that they see every day

My Students

The third-grade students at our community school are eager to learn. Many of them come to school and are very low academically. I am always looking for ways to engage them.

The third graders want to be immersed in their learning.

I want my students to be excited to come to school and learn. I want them to think outside the box when it comes to ways to improve their reading

My school is located on the East Side. It houses full-time pre-K to 8th grade. All students receive free breakfast and lunch. The area of the school is a high poverty zone. My students come from difficult upbringings, but they are worthy of the best education I can give them. I will do whatever it takes to make their learning engaging and effective.

My Project

I am requesting some plastic animals for each of my students to come and play with at our recess. Our recess is only 14 minutes long but the students look forward to it each day.

The students imagination can only go so far without the help of toys.

I have some of these plastic animals already in my room and my third graders all play together with them and have make-believe play. They have asked me to add to the collection because they enjoy playing with them so much.

In a world full of technology where kids get lost for hours at a time, I want my recess to be technology free. I want my students who are often going home and have to leave the lives of adults in the rough home life to be able to come to school and play as an eight-year-old should
