Imagination Stations for My Kinders

My students need a dollhouse, puppet stage, and puppets to help develop their oral language and story retelling skills.

My Students

Learning toys that don't make noise on their own? Learning toys that don't tell the kids what to do or where the kids provide the action - which do they prefer? I've found that my students get enough noisy toys at home. They're yearning for basic, kid-fueled toys!

Our school is located just outside of an army base in VA.

We're in a low income area where the vast majority of our kids receive free / reduced lunch and breakfast and are from single parent homes. Our class is made up of 19 of the most incredibly active and creative Kindergartners ever. They make me laugh every day with their antics. While they are a great group of kids I do find that their pretend play and oral language skills are a bit lacking.

My Project

This is my first year teaching Kindergarten at this school. My classroom is the 6th Kindergarten classroom in the school and was added late in the summer. As a result, I didn't have much to get my classroom up and running. I did my best to find toys at garage sales over the summer for them to play with during indoor recess and their learning center time each day. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to gather much for them to do. I do have a lot of puzzles and games. Then, I pulled out the few wooden building blocks that I do have. I was amazed that the kids who normally want to be on the computer for any free time in the classroom were clamoring to play with the blocks! I am requesting a dollhouse and puppet stage for our classroom. My students love using their imaginations to play in our room. They will be able to use the puppets and dollhouse during any free play times in our room but I will also be able to use them when practicing retelling stories.

I am looking forward to adding the puppets and stage and dollhouse to our classroom.

I am looking forward to seeing them use their imaginations when they are playing and increasing their language skills while they are pretending to be mommas, daddys, teachers, doctors, or farmers and their farm animals. The items I am requesting for this project will be instrumental in helping me help the children in my class develop their pretend play and oral language skills.
