I have been teaching for 29 years. I love and still enjoy my job as I find ways to inspire my students to do their best. I have a wonderful group of third grades that struggle with the skills they need to learn. My students are experiencing the complicated world of third grade, moving from learning to read to reading to learn. I have reluctant and struggling readers. They need a confidence boost. Something that inspires them. My best memories before all these high-stakes testing were using chapter books. I have introduced chapter books to one of my small reading groups. These children want to learn and be involved in reading books. Students who were reluctant to read are now jumping up quickly to come to my small reading groups. Some of my students struggle with reading, but it all seems to melt away as they are engrossed in the imagination of reading. A great side effect students are becoming better readers. I want them to love reading.
My Project
Struggling readers don't want to read. These chapter books are fun and exciting. I want them to jump for joy when it is their turn to come to the reading groups. When in small groups, students are curious and want to continue to read. Even as they struggle, they move through the chapter to find out what is happening next. Students develop a love of learning, increase vocabulary, become fluent, ask questions, and acquire high-level thinking skills. At the same time, they want to continue to read for fun; thus, the students will meet my goals.
